How Many Instagram DMs Can You Send Per Day Without Getting Blocked?
Instagram does not publish a DM limit, but it enforces one on new conversations with non-followers. The exact message it returns, what it means, and how to pace outreach.
You have a list of people to reach on Instagram: creators for a collaboration, prospects for a pitch, guests for an event. Most of them don't follow you. You search for how many DMs you can send in a day and get numbers from 5 to 200, each stated with the same confidence. This article explains where the real limit sits, what Instagram actually does when you reach it, and how to pace your sends so you stay under it.
How many Instagram DMs can you send per day?
Instagram does not publish a daily DM limit. The limit that matters for outreach applies to new conversations you start with people who don't follow you, counted over a 24-hour window. Published estimates range from 5 to 200 a day. DM Studio, a Chrome extension for Instagram outreach, caps sends at 100 a day, spaces them 20 to 40 seconds apart, and rests at least 30 minutes after every 10.
Those numbers are not a guarantee. They are deliberately conservative: the goal is to stay well below the point where Instagram starts refusing delivery, and to stop the moment it does.
The estimates you find online disagree because the limit is not a fixed number. It moves with the age of your account, how many of your messages get replies or reports, and whether the people you message follow you. Two accounts sending the same 60 messages on the same day can get different results.
What actually happens when you hit the limit?
Instagram does not ban your account for sending too many DMs. It stops delivering new-conversation messages and returns this text, word for word:
Your message can't be delivered. There is a limit to the number of new conversations you can start every 24 hours with people who don't follow you.
Three details in that sentence matter more than any number:
- "New conversations", not messages. Replies inside threads that already exist keep working.
- "People who don't follow you." Messages to your followers sit in a different bucket.
- "Every 24 hours." In our observation this behaves like a rolling window, not a midnight reset. Capacity comes back as the conversations you started 24 hours earlier age out.
If you are waiting for an "Action Blocked" pop-up, you will miss it. The text above appears as a failed delivery inside the conversation, not as a warning banner, and it contains none of the words most guides tell you to watch for: no "blocked", no "try again later", no "rate".
In August 2026 we reviewed the failure log of one account running outreach through DM Studio. Of 37 failed sends, 33 returned this exact message. The other four were network errors or profiles that no longer existed. When a cold DM fails, this is almost always why.
If you are looking at this message right now, our guide to the "Your message can't be delivered" limit covers how long it lasts and what to do next.
Why do cold DMs hit the limit faster than replies?
A message to someone who doesn't follow you does not land in their inbox. Instagram places it in their message requests folder, and starting a request is the action Instagram counts (Instagram Help Center). The outreach limit is, in practice, a limit on message requests.
Replying to people who already messaged you is not counted the same way. That is why a support account can answer hundreds of threads a day while an outreach account is stopped at a fraction of that. How the requests folder looks from the sender's side, and what gets a request accepted, is in Why your Instagram DM went to message requests.
Two practical consequences follow:
- Once someone accepts your request, your follow-ups to them no longer count as new conversations.
- The first message is the one that gets counted, so it should be worth opening. A request that earns a reply is the strongest signal your account can send.
Is there a safe number of DMs per day?
No number guarantees anything, because the limit adapts to your account. What holds up over time is a set of behaviors: send at a human pace, stop as soon as Instagram refuses delivery, and let the 24-hour window clear before you resume. These are the rules built into DM Studio, and they are worth following even if you send by hand:
| Rule | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily ceiling | 100 new conversations | A ceiling, not a target |
| Gap between sends | 20 to 40 seconds, randomized | People don't send on a fixed timer |
| Batch size | 10 sends, then rest | Bursts are what automated patterns look like |
| Rest between batches | 30 minutes minimum, 60 by default | Spreads the day out instead of front-loading it |
| On the limit message | Stop for the day | Retrying while refused is what escalates restrictions |
If your account is new or has never sent outreach, start with a fraction of these numbers and raise them over a couple of weeks. Personalize every first message. An account whose requests get replies is treated very differently from one whose requests get ignored or reported.
If your list is a set of creators you want to work with, How to DM 100 influencers on Instagram turns these rules into a day-by-day plan.
What about DM tools built on Instagram's official API?
Tools built on Meta's Messenger Platform for Instagram solve a different problem. They require an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator) connected to a Facebook Page (Meta for Developers), and they operate inside a standard messaging window: a business has up to 24 hours to respond after a person messages it (Messenger Platform policy). The API is built for replying, comment-triggered auto-DMs, and support. It has no way to open a conversation with someone who has never contacted your account.
If your task is reaching people who don't know you yet, an API-based tool will not do it at any price. The limit described in this article applies to the only channel that can: sending from your own account, as yourself.
DM Studio is not built on that API. It sends from the Instagram session you are already logged into in Chrome, the same way you would by hand, and it never asks for your password. The full comparison is in Instagram's official DM API vs cold outreach tools.
How DM Studio paces your sends
DM Studio is a Chrome extension for Instagram outreach that runs the pacing above for you. You build or paste a recipient list, write a message with personalization fields, and start a queue. The extension sends from your logged-in session at 20 to 40 seconds apart, 10 at a time, with a rest between batches. The 100-a-day cap and the minimum interval are hard limits in the code; Settings only let you make them more conservative.
When Instagram returns the new-conversation limit, the queue stops on the spot. The remaining recipients stay pending instead of being burned through, and the extension shows a 24-hour notice so you know why. The queue also stops after five consecutive failures of any kind, in case Instagram changes the wording.
The free plan sends 10 DMs a day with no signup. Pro lifts the daily limit to the 100-a-day cap and adds batch sending and custom intervals. See pricing, or add DM Studio to Chrome and send your first ten today.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram ban you for sending too many DMs?
Sending too many new-conversation DMs gets those messages refused, not your account removed. Accounts that keep retrying while refused are widely reported to receive longer restrictions, which is why DM Studio stops the queue instead of retrying.
How long does the Instagram DM limit last?
Instagram's own message says 24 hours. In our observation it is a rolling window: capacity returns as the conversations you started a day earlier age out, rather than all at once at midnight.
Do DMs to my followers count toward the limit?
The message Instagram returns refers specifically to people who don't follow you. Messages to followers and replies in existing threads do not trigger it. They may have their own, higher, limits.
Can I send 200 DMs a day on Instagram?
To people who don't follow you, we would not try. Published estimates for established accounts top out around 150 to 200, but they come from user reports, not from Instagram. DM Studio's ceiling is 100, and we treat it as a ceiling, not a target.
Is 20 seconds between DMs enough?
It is the minimum DM Studio allows, and every gap is randomized between that value and double it. If your account is new, widen the interval in Settings (up to 5 minutes) and shorten your daily list.
